Helpful Energy Saving and Safety Tips
for Ranges, Water Heaters and Space Heaters
Always read the manufacturer’s instructions for all your gas appliances.
Ranges
• Make sure burner flames are blue in color.
• Use your range for cooking, never for heating purposes.
• Clean burner ports with wire or paper clip rather than toothpicks or matches.
• Keep flammable items away from burners.
• Leave the oven door closed when baking. The escaping heat is wasted energy.
• Check for worn oven gaskets that might allow heat to escape.
• Always leave at least 1" of air space between pans and an oven surface for air circulation.
If you smell gas or suspect you have a gas leak:
• Extinguish all flames or turn off appliances.
• Don’t operate a light switch or light a match.
• Open windows and doors to ventilate the area.
• Leave your house and call the gas company immediately.
Water Heaters
• Keep the area around the water heater clear and clean.
• Keep the temperature set at about 120 degrees. This will conserve energy and prevent scalding.
• Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for installing insulation.
• Conserve water by repairing leaks and installing flow restrictors to showerheads and faucets.
• Never store or use flammable liquids near water heater.
Furnaces
• Have your unit serviced once a year before the start of the heating season.
• Clean or replace air filter as necessary.
• Keep pilots, burner chamber and thermostats clean.
